Flamed granite is perfect for outdoors, especially when it’s wet

Rougher flamed textured granite combines safety with aesthetic beauty. The small uneven grains on the stone’s surface hold an extremely good grip. Providing flamed granite with excellent non-slip, scratch-resistant, stain-resistant and anti-skid properties underfoot.

For this reason, flamed granite is often used around swimming pools, patios, shower rooms and bathrooms — pretty much wherever there is likely to be a slip hazard.

With a tight grain and even texture, granite flamed stone will fit beautifully into any modern designer’s plans. Including on or around:

  • Pathways
  • Patios
  • Squares
  • Driveways
  • Bodies of water (such as swimming pools and ponds)
  • Commercial buildings and areas
  • Any area with high volumes of foot traffic

Find out more about our gorgeous flamed granite paving colours:

  • Silver-grey — a mottled pattern of white, cream and silver. This light shade is perfect for brightening up dark or small spaces and fits into both contemporary and traditional landscapes.

  • Blue-grey — a striking blend of mild-grey and hard-blues with speckles of black and milky quartz. This colour is very popular in modern garden settings.

  • Black — with crisp lines and a rich, tight-grain pattern with smatterings of deep grey and charcoal, there’s no understating the elegance of black flamed granite.

Granite is timeless and beautiful — the stone of kings and queens.

It’s easy to see why granite was so popular amongst the royals and the wealthy throughout history. It combines exquisiteness with practicality and requires virtually no maintenance. After all, there are many ancient monuments made from granite still standing today.

Flamed granite is generally honed and sawned and is available either calibrated or uncalibrated. The flaming process itself leaves behind a subtle, natural-looking faded appearance on the stone’s surface. Colours in general are more muted — and yet the tight grainy texture of the surface can even give it a slightly sparkly, elegant glimmer.

You’ll love how easy flamed granite is to maintain once it is installed. And it will continue to impress friends and family for a lifetime.

FAQs

1. What is a flamed granite finish?

A deliberately rougher granite surface texture, created in mind to give the stone anti-skid and non-slip features. To achieve this, flamed granite is heated at very high temperatures. The high heat forces the individual grains in the stone to burst and change clour. The result is that tiny surface variations on the stone move about and resettle into uneven steps, making the granite less slippery.

2. Where can you use flamed granite?

Anywhere. Flamed granite is well-suited to uncovered, exterior applications. But it will also look great and function exceptionally well in every room of the house. Because of its non-slip texture, flamed granite is often used around ponds and pools outside, and in bathrooms, shower floors, and other high-moisture indoor areas in the house.

3. Is flamed granite porous?

Yes. Granite is porous and when it is flamed it becomes even more porous and more likely to stain. To protect the stone from staining, we recommend that you seal it.

4. Do you need to seal flamed granite?

Yes and no. We generally advise that you do seal it — as this will help to prevent staining and the growth of any algae, moss and lichens. This is especially true if you go for a lighter colour, such as silver-grey or blue-grey, where staining tends to be more visible.

But you don’t HAVE to seal your flamed granite paving. Some people even prefer to let it weather naturally first, for about a year, before applying a sealant. Granite is one of the toughest stones around. But we still recommend sealing right away, in order to protect it from fading and general wear.
